Worldwide more than 1.2 billion people do not have access to electricity. Since 80% of these people live in rural areas, the majority of them are dependent on diesel generators, which are expensive, harmful to the environment, and can only be used a few hours per day. Remote regions are often cut off from electricity and lack adequate infrastructure, potable water, sanitation, communication, and transportation.
